چکیده

This paper describes a multilevel bandwidth haptic display devoted to fundamental studies on tactile and kinesthetic interaction. The proposed concept is an alternative design based on a multistage display that combines several actuation technologies in order to reproduce stable and “factual” haptic sensation for a truthful sense of presence. Each layer concerns a specific bandwidth that is to be determined according to the dedicated technology and the psychophysical data.

Realistic haptic volume interaction for petrous bone surgery simulation

In this paper, a new approach for haptic volume interaction with high resolution voxelbased anatomic models is presented. The haptic rendering is based on a multi-point collision detection approach which provides realistic tool interaction with the models. Both haptics and graphics are rendered at sub-voxel resolution, which leads to a high level of detail and enables the exploration of the mod...

A Multi-Threaded Approach for Deformable/Rigid Contacts with Haptic Feedback

This paper presents a physically based method to deal with haptic feedback of manipulated deformable virtual objects in contact with rigid or deformable environment. The haptic rendering algorithm is based on the Signorini’s formulation of the contact as proposed in theoretical mechanics. Since haptic interaction requires high refresh rates, a multi-threaded methodology, sharing configuration v...

Realistic Haptic Interaction in Volume Sculpting for Surgery Simulation

Realistic haptic interaction in volume sculpting is a decisive prerequisite for successful simulation of bone surgery. We present a haptic rendering algorithm, based on a multi-point collision detection approach which provides realistic tool interactions. Both haptics and graphics are rendered at sub-voxel resolution, which leads to a high level of detail and enables the exploration of the mode...

A New Computational Model of Friction Applied to Haptic Rendering

A time-free, drift-free, multi-dimensional model of friction is introduced. A discrete implementation is developed which exhibits four solution regimes: sticking, creeping, oscillating, and sliding. Its computational solution is efficient to compute online and is robust to noise. It is applied to haptic rendering.

Levels of Detail in Reducing Cost of Haptic Rendering: A Preliminary User Study

Haptic rendering complex objects in virtual environments is computationally intensive. In this paper we start the investigation of a new category of approach to reducing the computation in haptic rendering. Our approach is based on the hypothesis that the accuracy of haptic perception might be limited. Results of the experiments described in this paper suggest that subjects might not be able to...
